Mr. Sherlock Holmes, who was usually very late in the mornings, save upon those not infrequent occasions when he was up all night, was seated at the breakfast table. I stood upon the hearth-rug and picked up the stick which our visitor had left behind him the night before. The Hound of the Barkervilles is the third of Arthur Conan Doyle's four Sherlock Holmes crime novels. Set largely on Dartmoor in Devon, it follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate the legend of a fearsome hound of supernatural origin. A poll of Sherlockians in 1999 ranked it the best of the four Holmes novels.
