自分は、大川端に近い町に生まれた。家を出て椎の若葉におおわれた、黒塀の多い横網の小路をぬけると、すぐあの幅の広い川筋の見渡される、百本杭の河岸へ出るのである。幼い時から、中学を卒業するまで、自分はほとんど毎日のように、あの川を見た。水と船と橋と砂洲と、水の上に生まれて水の上に暮しているあわただしい人々の生活とを見た。真夏の日の午すぎ、やけた砂を踏みながら、水泳を習いに行く通りすがりに、嗅ぐともなく嗅いだ河の水のにおいも、今では年とともに、親しく思い出されるような気がする。…
Sobre el libro
The text is a recollection by someone who grew up by the Sumida River, remembering daily views of the water, boats, bridges, sandbars and the people living on the water, and confessing an attachment to the river. It describes the comfort and loneliness stirred by each look at the water, and reads as quiet and nostalgic.

Ryūnosuke Akutagawa (1 March 1892 – 24 July 1927), also known by his art name Chōkōdō Shujin, was a Japanese writer active in the Taishō period who is regarded as the "father of the Japanese short story". He died by suicide at the age of 35 through an overdose of barbital, and Japan's premier literary award, the Akutagawa Prize, is named after him.
