About the book

“산유화” (Mountain Flowers) is a poem by Kim Sowol, published in October 1924 in Yeongdae no. 3 and included in his 1925 poetry collection Jin dallae kkot. Composed of four stanzas and sixteen lines, it unfolds through a circular structure and the repetition and variation of its words, expressing a longing for the universal principle of ceaseless arising, perishing, and change. Lines ending in “-ne” create its rhythm, and soprano Sumi Jo later set the poem to music on her 2002 album.
