Kamakura is no exception. Apart from people like me who live here all year round, when you go out to the beach you see only village children, children from the bay, men with dragnets, or peddlers walking along the shore. It is rare to see anyone who looks like a city person.

About the book
The text describes the narrator's encounter on the late-autumn Kamakura shore with a strange man who takes over the narrator's reading spot and digs a large bottle out of the sand. The prose moves at an unhurried pace, with a sense of quiet unease building as the man appears without warning and behaves oddly.
Cultural notes (selection)
Background a translation can’t carry: social roles, history and allusions. While reading, tap “Note” at the end of a sentence to see them all.
地曳網 CustomsBeach seine fishing: a traditional fishing method in which anywhere from a few to several dozen fishermen work together to haul a large net from the sea onto the shore, usually carried out collectively by a whole ura-mura (fishing village). In the text it is mentioned alongside「里の子、浦の子」to convey that after autumn sets in, only local fishermen remain on the beach.
原因結果の理法 Allusion「理法」means law or principle; this expression refers to the law of cause and effect, standing in contrast to the mystical notion of「運命」(fate/destiny).
