About the book
Sanshirō is a 1908 novel by Natsume Sōseki, first serialized in the Asahi Shimbun and the opening work of his early trilogy. It follows Ogawa Sanshirō, a young man from the Kyushu countryside, as he arrives at the University of Tokyo and encounters a new urban world, fellow students, professors, and love. Through Sanshirō and those around him, the novel also offers a critique of Japan at the time.

This refers to the Russo-Japanese War (1904–1905). Port Arthur was a Russian fortress, and the siege caused extremely heavy casualties. After the war Japan took over the leased Kwantung Territory, and Dairen became a commercial port where many went to seek a living—hence the remark that "you can make more money over there."
