赤衛軍 雪のシベリア
The Red Army of Soviet Russia. From 1918 Japan dispatched troops to Siberia and fought repeatedly against the Red Army and guerrilla forces, withdrawing in 1922. The line “十月には赤衛軍との衝突があった” refers to this kind of armed conflict.
杜氏 砂糖泥棒
A "tōji" was originally the highest-ranked craftsman in a sake brewery, overseeing all the brewing workers. Here the term is borrowed for the foreman of a soy sauce brewery, and the author deliberately adds the note "職工長の如き役目の者" to show this transferred use of the title within the factory.
